About the Scholarship

On an annual basis, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Kappa Beta Omega Chapter offers two types of scholarships to deserving young African-American women within the greater Vallejo community. These scholarships are based on either academic achievement or financial need.

Qualified African American female seniors enrolled in a high school in Vallejo, Benicia, and American Canyon, California, with a 2.5 or above grade point average (GPA) may apply. 

 

Note: The residency requirement does not apply to applicants who participated in the 2023 Kappa Beta Omega Chapter Debutante Ball. All other eligibility requirements apply.

Before you apply online...

You will need to have the following items readily available for upload. If these items are not uploaded at the time of submission, your application will be considered incomplete. Please remember, incomplete applications are automatically disqualified.

  1. A current picture

  2. A statement of school and community activities, which you are a participant (please include any office(s) held from grades 9-12).

  3. A statement of future plans and ambitions including college goals/plans (limited to 250 words).

  4. Two letters of recommendation (one must be from a teacher, counselor or school administrator).

  5. The required essay (see below).

Scholarship Essay 

Write a brief essay (1 page/single spaced or 2 pages double spaced using Times Roman size 12 font) on one of the topics listed below. The essay offers you an opportunity to demonstrate your ability to organize your thoughts and to express yourself.

1. Describe how you have shaped your community.
 

2. Identify a difficult challenge or situation that you faced in your life and describe how it has shaped you into the person you are today.
 

3. Identify a social or political issue that concerns your school and/or community. Then explain what actions you took to overcome it and how it has affected you and your family.

Essay Helpful Hints:

  1. Thesis should not only address the prompts but also should offer an opinion that the essay can defend given the writing constraints.

  2. Details and examples should be specific and well chosen.

  3. Ideas should be logically and coherently organized.

  4. Word choice and use of sentence structure should be purposeful and precise.

  5. Essay should be carefully edited for grammatical and mechanical errors.
